Why It Matters
A great coach is the cornerstone of sporting success. As seen with leaders like Gopichand and Hawa Singh, empowered coaches can produce generations of champions. To build a strong sporting nation, we must first invest in those who dedicate their lives to shaping athletes.
I met Padma Shri awardee Faisal in Kashmir and was struck by his dedication to martial arts. A world champion, he has built over 100 centres training 17,000 students, even declining a government DSP post to continue his mission. Known for his integrity, he charges only a nominal fee, devoting his life to nurturing young talent.
Faisal has produced exceptional talent, including multiple national and Asian champions such as Sabahat Afreen, Hashim Mansoor and Tajamul Islam, a Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao ambassador. I was particularly struck by his commitment to women in sport—overcoming initial opposition in a conservative community to create lasting acceptance and success.
Despite 17,000 students across 100 centres, the facilities remain inadequate, with limited space and no proper mats or equipment, and training halted in winter. I envision a world-class central training hall where top athletes can train under elite coaches like Faisal and Wasim, enabling India to produce world-beating champions.
